How Often Should You Pump a Septic Tank?
A simple schedule by household size and tank capacity — plus the warning signs you’re overdue.
The short answer
Most households should pump every 3–5 years. Smaller tanks and larger households sit at the shorter end; a lightly used system at the longer end.
What changes the interval
Tank size, number of occupants, use of a garbage disposal, and whether the system is conventional or aerobic all shift the timeline. Aerobic systems also need a separate maintenance contract on top of periodic pumping.
Signs you’re overdue
Slow drains, gurgling, odors near the tank or drain field, or standing water above the field mean you should schedule sooner rather than later.
